Las Cruces City Council amended two ordinances and approved a new one intended to clarify roadside solicitation laws, improve public safety and the well-being of pedestrians and motorists, and help curtail the theft of shopping carts from retail stores.

Bandelier National Monument reports first rabies case of 2024

Bandelier National Monument has confirmed that a bat found dead in the park tested positive for rabies. This marks the first confirmed rabies case of the year for northern New Mexico. The deceased bat was discovered in the Cottonwood Picnic Area on July 7.


UNM linguistics department receives $494K NSF grant for study on bilingual communities

The University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics recently received a $494,659 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for their project titled, “Addressee effects in demonstrative systems across bilingual communities.” This three-year project, funded by NSF, will be housed in UNM’s Department of Linguistics and led by Professors Naomi Shin and Rosa Vallejos-Yopán in collaboration with Amalia Skilton from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.


Las Cruces opens youth sportsmanship basketball registrations

The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department will begin individual registration for Youth Sportsmanship Basketball on August 22, 2024. The program offers four age divisions for all genders between the ages of 4 and 12, along with one division each for middle school boys and girls (14U). Proof of age or a Parks and Recreation Activity ID Card is required for all participants. Middle school participants must also provide grade verification.

Las Cruces Streets Management will be applying a chip seal surface treatment on various city streets through Friday, Aug. 9, 2024.


Office of Emergency Management seeks members for local emergency planning committee

The Office of Emergency Management in Santa Fe, NM, is seeking representatives from various sectors to join the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). The committee's mandate includes developing an emergency response plan, specifically a Hazardous Materials Emergency Plan, to address hazardous chemicals within the community.


New Mexico faces ongoing public health concerns over obstetric deserts

For women living in rural parts of New Mexico, access to obstetric and gynecological (OB-GYN) care is often limited. Obstetric care, which involves the treatment of pregnant women including child delivery, is a particularly limited service in the state. So much so, that parts of New Mexico are referred to as “OB deserts.” It’s an issue that The University of New Mexico’s College of Population Health (COPH) is trying to help solve.

Streets Management will be applying a chip seal surface treatment on various city streets beginning Monday, August 5, 2024, with expected completion in four days. Residents and businesses will be notified 24 hours prior to the commencement of work.


NMSU Board of Regents schedules regular meeting for August 19
