OPINION: The Erosion of the Democratic Process: Public Exclusion in New Mexico’s Legislative Process
By Ramona Goolsby | Feb 1, 2024
In a constitutional republic, the fundamental principle is that the power resides with the people. Yet, in recent events unfolding within the chambers of the New Mexico Legislature, this principle seems to be fading into obscurity. The decision by the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Christine Chandler to “log roll” comments on two separated bills without the presentation of both bills exemplifies the contempt legislators have for the people of this state. Those present were required to speak on HB 27 & HB 129, both very complex issues affecting basic constitutional rights and those on zoom were basically ignored.

Did you know that if you are a Doña Ana County (DAC) resident without health insurance coverage, and are diagnosed with cancer, you will be denied an appointment and ultimately denied life-saving cancer treatment at Memorial Medical Cancer Center (MMC)? Albuquerque City Council District 6 deserves better than half-baked candidates we can’t trust
By Adeo Rose Bennett Herrick | Nov 30, 2023
I am a pro-union, life-long New Mexican Democrat. I have lived in the University Heights, South San Pedro, and like many District 6 neighbors, including my little brother, the Cinnamon Tree Apartments. I am a transgender LGBTQ activist. I am writing this with a signed and sealed ballot for my friend Jeff Hoehn in the absentee voting box. If you live between I-25, Gibson, Lomas, and Eubank, or in the Mesa Del Sol development, I urge you to vote in the 12/12 Runoff. Voter apathy is not the answer. Voter apathy is the status quo.
