The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department will begin individual registration for Youth Sportsmanship Basketball on August 22, 2024. The program offers four age divisions for all genders between the ages of 4 and 12, along with one division each for middle school boys and girls (14U). Proof of age or a Parks and Recreation Activity ID Card is required for all participants. Middle school participants must also provide grade verification.
The registration fee is $50 per individual with a jersey or $40 for returning players who already have a jersey. League play is scheduled to commence the week of October 7, 2024. Space in all divisions is limited, and registration operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Online registration will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2024, or until division capacity is filled. Interested parties can complete their registration at https://lascruces.gov/arts-and-leisure/parks-and-recreation/. A current Parks and Recreation activity ID card must be on file at the time of registration. Middle school participants may need to provide grade verification.
In-person registration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Meerscheidt Recreation Center located at 1600 E. Hadley Avenue. Participants are required to present either a current Parks and Recreation activity ID card or a birth certificate during registration. Middle school participants may need to provide grade verification.
To obtain a Parks and Recreation activity ID card, both the parent or guardian and the participant must appear in person at Meerscheidt Recreation Center to sign permission forms, show proof of age, and have the participant’s photo taken. ID cards can be obtained from Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but not on registration dates.
Team placement will be determined by Meerscheidt staff based on respective age divisions; specific team requests or switching teams are not permitted except for siblings within the same household if they qualify for the same age division and have documented their request during the registration process by contacting (575) 541-2563.
Volunteer coaches are needed for this program as it provides an opportunity to spend time with children while teaching them basketball fundamentals. All levels of coaching experience are welcome; beginners are encouraged to participate as well.
