Albuquerque introduces new employment initiative for homeless residents

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Today, Mayor Keller called for a renewed commitment to integrating public employment opportunities into the City’s efforts to address homelessness. The City introduced its plans for “A Better Way Forward.” The program will offer jobs to individuals staying at the Gateway Center and Gateway West (former Westside Emergency Housing Center) cleaning streets and sidewalks in Albuquerque, transportation to and from job sites, and connection to other services like financial literacy, banking, and case management.


UNM Hospital announces wage increases amid ongoing union negotiations

The University of New Mexico Hospital has announced a 3 percent wage increase for its employees at the Lomas Blvd. campus, its clinics, and many employees at the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC). This raise is made possible due to newly increased Medicaid reimbursement, supported by the New Mexico Health Care Authority.


UNM graduate premieres musical composition at New York festival

Carlos Arellano, a graduate student in Theory and Composition at The University of New Mexico, recently premiered his musical composition at the 2024 Orchestrating for the 21st Century Workshop. This event was part of the Water Music New York: More Voices festival organized by the Albany Symphony from June 4 to 9.


Gun-related crimes decrease significantly in Albuquerque for early 2024

Albuquerque is experiencing decreases in three major gun-related crime categories so far in 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.


Juvenile arrested for murder during attempted theft

APD detectives arrested a 17-year-old on Thursday and charged him with the shooting death of Adrian Vallejos during an attempted auto theft of the victim’s Kia vehicle.


Scholarship established by alumnus Subhash Shah supports chemical engineering graduate students

Subhash Shah, a distinguished expert in hydraulic fracturing and well completions, has established the Dr. and Mrs. Subhash and Jaya Shah Family Endowed Scholarship Fund to assist graduate students in chemical engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM). The fund aims to alleviate financial burdens for two selected graduate students each year.


City offers grants for downtown security camera installations

ALBUQUERQUE – The Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency (MRA), in partnership with the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), has launched the Community Connect Downtown Security Camera Grant Program. This initiative offers grants to property owners for purchasing and installing security cameras on commercial buildings in Downtown Albuquerque.


City unveils renovation plans for Albuquerque's renamed Gateway West

Today, Mayor Keller and the City of Albuquerque’s Health, Housing & Homelessness Department showcased the newly renovated dorms and kitchen at the Westside Emergency Housing Center. The City also announced a new name for the facility, Gateway West, as the center is no longer an emergency housing center but a resource open year-round to connect the most vulnerable in our community to hope, healing, and housing. Gateway West shelters around 450-660 people every night and offers critical services including transportation, meals, and medical care.


Gorilla joins senior troop at Sedgwick County Zoo

In late June, a new baby gorilla joined the family group of western lowland gorillas. Concurrently, Matadi, a 42-year-old female gorilla, departed to join a senior troop at Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas.


NMSU completes critical incident response training with local law enforcement

New Mexico State University (NMSU), in collaboration with state and local law enforcement agencies, conducted a critical incident response training involving an active-shooter scenario on Thursday.


Las Cruces enforces updated street and sidewalk solicitation ordinance

The recently approved updates to Sections 21-62 and 21-63 of the Las Cruces Municipal Code related to street and sidewalk solicitations will go into effect Friday, Aug. 16, 2024.


NMSU Extension joins Family Engagement Fair in Lordsburg

In partnership with the Substance Prevention Network and Hidalgo County Health Coalition, New Mexico State University Hidalgo County Cooperative Extension Service will facilitate a breakout session at the Family Engagement and Resource Fair in Lordsburg, New Mexico, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. This event is free and open to the public. The fair, which will be held at the Lordsburg High School commons area, 501 W. 4th St., Lordsburg, aims to provide community members with tools to support children and teens.


UNM's annual economics day to highlight state-specific research

The University of New Mexico Department of Economics will highlight six state-specific economic research projects during its annual New Mexico Economics Research Day on Friday, Aug. 16 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The free event will be held in person at the Economics building and via Zoom.


Las Cruces delays enforcement of new shopping cart ordinance until October

The new City ordinance, commonly called the Shopping Cart Ordinance, will go into effect Friday, Aug. 16, but Las Cruces police will delay enforcement for 60 days to allow retail establishments time to submit a plan and application.


UNM students participate in BioDesign Challenge exploring historical & future aspects of tattoos

Two students from The University of New Mexico recently participated in the BioDesign Challenge in New York City with a project examining the history and future of tattooing. UNM teams have previously competed in the challenge with various projects, including smart acequias monitoring and eco-friendly, recyclable organic fabrics.
