UNM launches clinical trial using heated chemo for ovarian cancer

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center has initiated a new clinical trial to explore the efficacy of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in treating ovarian cancer. This surgical technique, typically used for digestive cancers, is being applied to ovarian cancer patients in hopes of improving outcomes.

First West Nile virus death reported in Bernalillo County

The City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department and Bernalillo County Planning and Development Services Department announced today the first West Nile virus death of 2024 in Bernalillo County, involving a 65-year-old woman. This case is one of two positive human cases reported in the county this year. The city has also detected West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes through routine monitoring at various locations.

UNM's open educational resources initiative projects significant student savings

The University of New Mexico's Open Educational Resources (OER) Initiative has made significant strides since its inception in the spring of 2023. Collaborating with faculty, the initiative has championed the adoption, adaptation, and creation of OER at UNM and two other New Mexico colleges. Projections based on historical enrollment and textbook costs estimate student savings from the OER initiative to be between $466,000 and $486,000 for the Academic Year 2024-2025.
