In late June, a new baby gorilla joined the family group of western lowland gorillas. Concurrently, Matadi, a 42-year-old female gorilla, departed to join a senior troop at Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP) collaborates with animal caregivers to ensure these critically endangered animals find the right social dynamics that promote their health and well-being. At her new home, Matadi will reunite with her half-sister Kivu, aged 45, and a 31-year-old male named Matumaini.

"We want Matadi’s golden years to be filled with health and happiness, and being reunited with Kivu is a promising way to ensure that happens," said Amber Alink, ABQ BioPark Primate and Elephant Curator.

Sedgwick County Zoo also cares for both bachelor and family troops of gorillas within their multi-species Downing Gorilla Forest.

"So far, Matadi is settling into her new home beautifully," said Danielle Decker, Zoological Manager for primates at Sedgwick County Zoo. "Our care team has enjoyed getting to know her and we’re excited to introduce her to her new troop."
