Damien Flores named seventh poet laureate for City of Albuquerque

The City's Department of Arts & Culture and the Albuquerque Poet Laureate Program announced the selection of Damien Flores as the city's seventh poet laureate during a celebration on July 7 at the Albuquerque Museum. Flores, a native of Old Town Albuquerque and alumnus of Albuquerque High School and the University of New Mexico, succeeds Anna C. Martinez (2022-2024).

Christian Slough joins NM EDD's office after diverse experience

Christian Slough joined UNM Rainforest Innovations (UNMRI) as an Innovation Intern during his last semester at The University of New Mexico, where he was completing his Master of Business Administration. As an Innovation Intern, he conducted in-depth prior art searches and market analyses and identified potential commercial partners for local technology startups. Additionally, he drafted non-confidential summaries to position university technologies for external licensing and partnerships.


APD arrests suspect during Downtown operation targeting underage drinking and firearms

ALBUQUERQUE – APD detectives and officers arrested a 19-year-old during an overnight operation in Downtown that targeted underage individuals with firearms in parking garages. The arrest occurred one week after a 17-year-old was murdered in another Downtown parking garage.

ALBUQUERQUE – APD burglary detectives have arrested a suspect in multiple home burglaries. In one case, he forced entry into a Northeast Heights home and used violence against elderly residents before stealing money from them.


Pediatrician presents findings on fentanyl exposure among infants

"Why and how does a baby get fentanyl?" This question was on the mind of Keisuke “KK” Abe, MD, MPH, during his second day of practice in the pediatric emergency department at The University of New Mexico Hospital in 2021. He encountered young children being rushed in for treatment from the life-threatening drug. Motivated to address this issue, Abe enrolled in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program with a concentration in Epidemiology at the College of Population Health (COPH) during his Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship.


Mayor Keller appoints Jodie Esquibel as Director of Albuquerque Community Safety

Today, Mayor Tim Keller announced that Jodie Esquibel will continue to lead the Albuquerque Community Safety Department (ACS) after serving as acting director since March, when founding director Mariela Ruiz-Angel was promoted to Associate Chief Administrative Officer.
