Equality New Mexico leader takes sabbatical; organization continues advocacy efforts

Marshall Martinez, Executive Director of Equality New Mexico (EQNM), will take a sabbatical this June. Martinez has led EQNM for five years, contributing significantly to the organization's growth and advocacy efforts for queer and trans New Mexicans. During his absence until after Labor Day, Rudy Montoya and Nathan Saavedra will assume leadership roles.

Martinez expressed the need for rest due to continuous work since the pandemic's onset. "I’m taking this time to recover from the stress of doing this work nonstop since the middle of the pandemic," he said. This decision aligns with EQNM's new policy allowing full-time staff 90 days of paid leave after five years of service.

Under Martinez’s leadership, EQNM expanded its staff and political engagement, endorsing numerous pro-LGBTQ+ candidates with an 85% win rate. The organization evolved into a multi-issue force tackling various legislative and educational campaigns.

Martinez emphasized self-care among leaders: “We learned the hard way that leaders who are exhausted...make bad decisions.” His break reflects lessons from past generations of queer leaders who faced burnout during the AIDS epidemic.

While away, Montoya and Saavedra will manage daily operations. "Marshall’s decision to take a sabbatical is a testament to the values he’s always championed," said Montoya.

Martinez noted that municipal elections would not intensify until his return, making it an opportune time for transition. He assured that EQNM remains strong: “The organization is in the best hands.”

Looking ahead to critical upcoming elections, Martinez stressed strategic planning and self-care: “Being burnt out doesn’t just affect me...It impacts our team’s energy." His return in September is anticipated with expectations for renewed focus and ideas.

EQNM continues its mission amid challenges facing LGBTQ+ communities in New Mexico while advocating for sustainable practices within movement work.
