Construction is set to commence on May 22 for the Central railroad crossing in Downtown Albuquerque, marking a significant step in the development of the Albuquerque Rail Trail. This project will transform existing underpasses into an overpass.

Terry Brunner, interim director of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency, noted that extensive planning has led to this point. The agency is prepared to begin work on a new ramp adjacent to the Alvarado Transit Center. The project, with an estimated cost of $20 million, also includes plans for a second ramp across the tracks, which is anticipated to open to the public by early 2026.

Brunner mentioned that traffic disruptions are expected to be minimal during construction.

The Albuquerque Rail Trail has been a long-standing objective for local business advocates. Terri Cole, president and CEO of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce (GACC), stated that the Rail Trail aligns with their mission "to work with government, business and community partners to promote and develop a welcoming business environment and thriving diverse economy."

Cole emphasized that for years, the Chamber has supported this proposed 7-mile urban trail. It aims to connect various parts of Albuquerque including historic sites like Rail Yards and Old Town as well as attractions such as museums and BioPark.
