Week three at the Roundhouse was described as the most eventful so far by EQNM's staff and fellows, who are actively advocating for the Queer and Trans community this legislative session. Nathan Saavedra, EQNM program manager, noted, "There was a lot of running around, talking to legislators, and pushing our bills to get heard as quickly as possible." The team participated in Youth Lobby Day and Public Health Day, successfully recruiting future volunteers.
The week presented challenges with discussions surrounding the Protection of Women’s Sports Act (HB185) and federal executive orders impacting their community. Despite these hurdles, EQNM collaborated with the Transgender Resource Center on an op-ed published in the Santa Fe New Mexican. Saavedra stated, "There’s been a lot in the news this week and a majority of it is scary. We’re holding on to the values that keep us going."
EQNM remains committed to advocacy work through both victories and setbacks. Their team of fellows is gaining experience in legislative processes such as bill introduction and committee hearings. Last week involved activities like dealing with filibusters, lobbying efforts for sex education policy, and enjoying local food from Fusion.
Youth Lobby Day took place on February 4th with organizations including BFNM, ACLU-NM, PPRM, TWU, PNNM, Strong Families NM joining EQNM. Fellow Yza shared insights into lobbying: “I've been learning what an all-encompassing term ‘lobbying’ is.” Chira emphasized audience-specific bill pitching strategies while Arlo recounted positive feedback from a legislator.
Looking ahead to another active week at the Legislature: The Internet Privacy & Safety Act (IPSA: HB307) will be reviewed on February 12th; a rental fees bill (SB267) is set for discussion on February 13th; National Sex Education Week will see support for SB258.
Nathan Saavedra anticipates increased advocacy activity via social media and other communication channels: “Expect plenty of advocacy requests coming your way via social media, text messages & phone banks.” Community members are encouraged to join EQNM's Rapid Response Team for timely alerts when their involvement is crucial.
