The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) are organizing a free domestic well water testing event in Mora on Saturday, July 26, 2025. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Contractor Connects hosted by New Mexico’s Disaster Case Management Team, located at Mora Independent Schools.
The first 100 participants will receive free well water tests, which usually cost around $150. Participants must bring their own water samples for testing. Test results will be mailed within two to three weeks after the event.
"Private well owners in San Miguel and Mora Counties can come to this water fair and find out more about the quality of their household drinking water," said Ground Water Quality Bureau Chief Justin Ball. "Free well water testing events give our communities peace of mind by helping families understand what's in their water and how to keep it safe, at no cost to them."

Residents should follow specific guidelines when collecting their samples: let the water run for two to three minutes before collection, use a clean container without odors, collect from the well head if possible, and fill the container close to the time of testing. They should also bring information about their wells such as depth and location details.
If unable to attend, residents can send someone with their sample along with contact and well information. Only private wells used for drinking water will be tested.
These "water fairs" allow owners to measure pH, specific conductance, and nitrate levels in their water—important factors for safe drinking water. High nitrate levels can pose risks to pregnant women and infants.
Since July 1, 2024, NMED has tested 175 private wells at these events, providing $25,250 in value. The department aims to invest $65 million statewide in fiscal year 2025.
