Shaver on Trump's pro-life protestor pardons: What more can we do in 'radical pro-abortion states like New Mexico'?

Tara Shaver, leader of Abortion Free New Mexico, said that President Donald J. Trump's pardon of 23 pro-life protesters highlights the perceived injustice in states with pro-abortion policies, such as New Mexico. This statement was published on her website on January 23.

According to Reuters, on January 23, President Trump pardoned 23 anti-abortion activists who had been convicted under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. This legislation prohibits obstructing access to reproductive health services. The pardons were signed in the Oval Office a day before the annual "March for Life" event in Washington, D.C. Among those pardoned was Lauren Handy, who had received a five-year prison sentence for blocking a clinic in Washington, D.C.

The New York Times reported that during the ceremony, President Trump said, "Twenty-three people were prosecuted who should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people. They should not have been prosecuted. This is a great honor to sign this." The pardons fulfilled a campaign promise made by Trump during a June speech to the Faith and Freedom Coalition where he said, "Many people are in jail over this. We’re going to get that taken care of immediately — [on the] first day."

According to her website, Shaver serves as a spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico and has been a full-time pro-life missionary since 2010. She works alongside her husband, Bud Shaver, with the aim of making New Mexico "Abortion Free." Their efforts have been commissioned by Operation Rescue and highlighted by major national news outlets.
