It’s a village to rescue a dog. At least it did this weekend when social media, word of mouth and plenty of concerned neighbors helped find a lost dog in the Petroglyphs.

Kyra Nieto told KRQE she was on her way home on Sunday when she saw a lost dog in the Santa Fe Village near Petroglyph National Monument. The dog wandered into the Petroglyphs, prompting a rescue effort that began with a post on an app. “I took some pictures giving an idea of where we were located, and I was like, can anybody from the neighborhood please come help us?” Nieto told KRQE. “We’re just stuck right now. We don’t know what to do. But this dog is here, and he needs our help.”

People from the neighborhood saw the post and eventually the dog was discovered hiding under a huge rock. Treats were used to lure the dog out. He was taken to a veterinarian for an examination. “We don’t know how long he’s been out there,” Nieto said. “But he is very skinny. You can see his ribs. His collar just slid right off of his neck over his head.”

The dog is a Shepard mix and could be a year or two old. His picture has been posted on various social media in hopes of finding the owner.

“He knows how to shake,” Nieto said. “He knows how to sit. He knows how to lay. I’m sure whoever he belongs to, he was really loved.”
