Two long abandoned fraternity houses are scheduled to be demolished in the near future, much to the delight of neighborhoods who welcome the removal of the two eyesores.

According to KRQE, an abandoned fraternity house at 1801 Mesa Vista is set to be demolished at the start of next year and replaced by apartments tentatively scheduled to open in 2024. Meanwhile, another abandoned fraternity house at 1705 Mesa Vista NE will be demolished in October. That house has been abandoned for four years.

UNM Students told KRQE that the frat house at 1801 Mesa Vista was ruining the appearance of the neighborhood. KRQE said UNM students called it a magnet for trouble and a bad look for the school.

“It’s definitely old and a little bit outdated, especially upon this row or this street it brings opportunity for invaders to come,” Ellie Nevitt, a UNM student, told KRQE. “We do have a lot of homeless people who like to just kind of camp out and it attracts some odd people.”

Developers are planning to replace the former frat house with a three-story apartment complex that will feature 35 units for students, electric vehicle charging stations, a yoga deck and outdoor grilling.

University officials hope to rebuild a new frat house at 1705 Mesa Vista NE. The abandoned frat house caught fire in June, necessitating it be demolished.
