Albuquerque appoints Sonya Lara as Director for Equity and Inclusion

The City of Albuquerque has appointed Sonya Lara as the new Director for the Office of Equity and Inclusion. The office's mandate is to cultivate a workforce that mirrors the community, boost local procurement and business with minority-owned enterprises, prioritize city investments in historically underfunded areas, and ensure that city services are delivered with an emphasis on equity.


Survey reveals mixed experiences among UNM campus faculty

A recent survey conducted by Advance at the University of New Mexico (UNM) reveals a complex mix of organizational experiences and attitudes among full-time, main campus faculty. The Fall 2023 survey highlighted high levels of work and teaching well-being among faculty, but low levels of physical and psychological well-being. Despite the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty remained engaged with their work tasks and generally felt supported during the promotion and tenure process.


AmeriCorps seniors honored at Department of Senior Affairs ceremony

The Department of Senior Affairs, in collaboration with Chief Administrative Officer Samantha Sengel, recently held a pinning ceremony to honor members of the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent (FGP) and Senior Companion Programs (SCP). The event celebrated the remarkable contributions of volunteers aged 55 and above who have been instrumental in guiding students towards higher academic achievement as Foster Grandparents. They also provide care for homebound individuals as Senior Companions. A total of 18 volunteers were recognized during the ceremony.

Doña Ana County Sheriff's office initiates sobriety checkpoints for May

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO) has initiated sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols at the start of May, a program that will run until the end of the month. This initiative aims to decrease the number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities associated with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).


Public Library announces free Summer Reading Program registration for 2024

The Public Library of Albuquerque/Bernalillo County has commenced online registration for its 2024 Summer Reading Program. The program, which celebrates reading, learning, and fun, is open to children, adults, and families of all ages. NMSU professor's phase two of bird genome research unveils new methods

The cataclysmic event known as the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction, which wiped out approximately 76% of all known species on Earth, including dinosaurs, has been a topic of intense research for years. This mass extinction, caused by an asteroid impact near what is now the Yucatan Peninsula, is believed to have paved the way for the emergence of modern birds and mammals. However, this theory has long been contested.


UNM Grand Challenges team fosters statewide space community connections

The University of New Mexico Sustainable Space Research Grand Challenge team is working to establish a center of space science-exploration excellence at the university. The team recently hosted an event that brought together industry, lab, and community space partners with faculty from various disciplines and institutions. This was done in an effort to connect all the space-related work happening across New Mexico.

NMSU engineering students receive Tim Thompson Graduate Scholarship

Four students from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at New Mexico State University (NMSU) have been recognized as recipients of the Tim Thompson Graduate Scholarship Fund in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The honorees, Nicholas Hall, James Flesner, Roman Chavez, and Nathan Troutman, were celebrated at a ceremony on May 3.
