Health care professionals in New Mexico are now eligible to apply for the Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP). This initiative offers up to $25,000 in student loan forgiveness for those who agree to work in underserved areas of the state for at least three years.
The application period begins on March 15 and will close on May 1 at 5 p.m. Interested applicants can find more details and application procedures on the Higher Education Department's website.
Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez emphasized the importance of supporting critical workforces, stating, “We are determined to support members of critical workforces throughout our state, and there is perhaps no more critical workforce than health care professionals.” She added that with backing from the governor and Legislature, New Mexico aims to become a more attractive place for workers while addressing community needs.
The program has expanded as part of efforts to recruit and retain high-quality health care professionals. Last fall, aid was provided to 524 new awardees under this program, increasing the total number of current recipients in New Mexico to 1,269.
While various scholarships are available through public colleges and universities for students pursuing health-related degrees, many working professionals still face significant college debt. The HPLRP covers over 25 health occupations, including licensed allied health, medical, dental fields, and certified behavioral health professions.
