Albuquerque Reads is calling for donations to support its kindergarten and first-grade students as they conclude the school year. The initiative aims to provide each student with a tote bag filled with books and additional items at end-of-year celebrations across participating elementary schools. These resources are intended to encourage continued reading throughout the summer.
The Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, which collaborates with local schools through this program, seeks contributions from businesses to enhance these tote bags. Suggested donations include coupons for family-friendly restaurants, school supplies, crafting materials, and reusable shopping bags.
"Literacy skills are incredibly important for our kids," emphasizes the program's mission statement. Research indicates that children who do not achieve grade-level reading proficiency by third grade face a significantly higher risk of dropping out of high school. The pandemic has exacerbated educational disparities in New Mexico, particularly affecting economically disadvantaged and Hispanic students.
For over two decades, Albuquerque Reads has partnered with Albuquerque Public Schools to improve literacy among young learners in Title I schools. Tutors dedicate 90 minutes weekly to one-on-one sessions with students using a structured curriculum designed by teachers. Throughout the academic year, each child receives at least 20 books to practice their reading skills at home.
