NMDOH announces partnership with Mescalero Apache Tribe to expand primary care services

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has announced an expansion of its primary care clinical services by partnering with the Mescalero Apache Tribe. This initiative marks the first time NMDOH is utilizing its public health infrastructure to enhance healthcare access in collaboration with a tribal entity.

According to NMDOH, the department and the Mescalero Apache Tribe have launched the Ruidoso Primary Care Clinic through a joint effort involving tribal leadership, state agencies, and community programs. The clinic will offer various health services, including chronic disease care and wellness visits. It is part of a broader pilot project that includes locations in Ruidoso and Albuquerque.

Support for this initiative has been secured through legislative funding and coordination among NMDOH, tribal health programs, and federal and local partners such as the Indian Health Service and Presbyterian Lincoln County Medical Center. Services will be provided within existing public health facilities, featuring extended hours to improve access for rural and tribal populations.

"This bold and necessary step toward health equity reflects our unwavering respect for Tribal sovereignty and a commitment to true government-to-government partnership," said Janet Johnson, Tribal Liaison for NMDOH. Johnson added that the initiative aims to increase provider availability, improve access to care, strengthen local infrastructure, reduce travel and wait times, and honor the sovereignty and voice of the Mescalero Apache people.

The New Mexico Department of Health is dedicated to advancing health equity and improving outcomes for residents across the state. It operates through eight divisions focused on various aspects of public health, including epidemiology, developmental disabilities support, health improvement initiatives, facilities management, medical cannabis regulation, among others. The department's Facilities Management division oversees several 24/7 facilities providing long-term care and treatment services. Additionally, NMDOH runs public health programs aimed at promoting health education, preventing diseases, reducing injuries, coordinating emergency medical services (EMS), conducting laboratory testing, maintaining vital records, and supporting healthcare access through rural clinics and school-based centers.
