On February 13, the city of Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico (UNM) announced a partnership to explore expanding UNM’s presence into Downtown Albuquerque. This initiative aims to revitalize the urban core and enhance educational opportunities for the community.
The city has land available at Third and Marquette, which it is offering to UNM for this expansion. District 2 City Councilor Joaquín Baca expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “I look forward to the discussions as we explore developing a UNM campus in Downtown.” He emphasized that these conversations could enhance the university’s presence and increase positive activity downtown.
A memorandum of understanding was signed by Mayor Tim Keller and UNM President Garnett S. Stokes, establishing collaboration between the city and university. This agreement will focus on evaluating potential locations, identifying academic program opportunities, and determining the feasibility of expanding into Downtown.
Stokes highlighted the potential benefits of this expansion: “By exploring how to expand UNM’s footprint into Downtown Albuquerque, we’re reimagining how a modern urban university can serve its community.” She noted that such an expansion would offer students unique opportunities for hands-on learning and career development while contributing to downtown's renaissance.
Mayor Keller drew parallels with Arizona State University's impact on downtown Phoenix, expressing readiness to help UNM achieve similar outcomes in Albuquerque. “When universities expand Downtown, they create a powerful momentum for economic growth; now it’s our turn to transform the heart of our city,” he said.
Under this agreement, UNM will assess academic program needs and infrastructure requirements while engaging faculty, students, and community stakeholders in planning. The city will provide technical support, explore financial mechanisms, and assist with regulatory processes.
The announcement event included participation from Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce President Terri Cole and GACC Immediate Past Chair Bruce Stidworthy.
