The University of New Mexico (UNM) announced on the social media platform X that two individuals were shot at Casas del Rio student housing.

According to UNM’s official Lobo Alert posted on July 25, 2025, "in the early morning hours of July 25, 2025, UNMPD received a report of gunshots fired at Casas del Rio (Gila), located at 420 Redondo Dr. NE in Albuquerque." Officers responding to that alert discovered two individuals had been shot, with one person deceased and the other injured. The alert said central campus was closed and a shelter-in-place order issued while law enforcement swept the area for a suspect.

As reported by The Daily Lobo on July 25, the university first sent a LoboAlert around 3:30 a.m., and by 9:52 a.m. confirmed that two victims had been shot. The campus remained under shelter-in-place orders, with central campus closed and UNM Police coordinating with state investigators. The outlet noted ongoing police activity and an advised avoidance of central campus by UNM leadership.

According to People.com, authorities later confirmed that one victim—a 14-year-old boy—was killed and another, a 19-year-old male, injured during the shooting in the Casas del Rio dorm complex on July 25. The report added that the suspect, identified later as 18-year-old John Fuentes, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Los Lunas and faces first-degree murder and other charges. Students had reported hearing multiple gunshots near midnight, prompting the shelter-in-place order and central campus lockdown.

The University of New Mexico is a public research university founded in 1889, serving as the flagship institution of higher education in the state with a central campus in Albuquerque and an enrollment of approximately 22,000–23,000 students.
