The New Mexico Freedoms Alliance (NMFA) has expressed its disapproval of the New Mexico House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee's decision to table House Bill 185, which sought to ensure single-sex participation in women’s and girls’ sports. The announcement was made in a press release on February 15.

A poll of registered voters in New Mexico found that 94% oppose biological males sharing locker rooms with girls, and 84% oppose boys participating in girls' sports. Democratic Representatives Joanne Ferrary, Angelica Rubio, Andrea Romero, and Elizabeth "Liz" Thomson voted to defeat the bill, while Republican Representatives John Block and Stefani Lord opposed the motion.

According to the New Mexico Legislature, House Bill 185 would require separate athletic opportunities for males and females. It mandates that public educational institutions and athletic clubs designate teams and events as male, female, or coeducational, with male participation prohibited in events designated for females. The bill provides private causes of action for those harmed by violations and ensures no adverse actions will be taken against institutions for compliance.

"This is not a partisan issue—it is a fundamental matter of fairness and safety for women and girls," said Sarah Smith, co-leader for NMFA. "For decades, Title IX has ensured that girls have equal opportunities to compete in sports. But now, those hard-fought rights are being eroded as biological males are allowed to take spots on female teams, win scholarships meant for girls, and even physically endanger female athletes." Smith added that it is unacceptable for legislators to prioritize ideology over the well-being of young girls. "We must protect female athletes from being forced into unfair and dangerous situations," she said. "If we do nothing, more girls will suffer injuries, lose opportunities, and be sidelined in the name of political correctness."

The NMFA was founded in 2020 as a non-partisan coalition advocating for civil liberties and constitutional governance. According to its website, NMFA organizes communication networks and initiatives to help local groups and individuals work toward common goals related to freedom, health, and government accountability.
