Lauri Costello, a member of the New Mexico & El Paso Interfaith Power and Light community, recently addressed climate issues in a letter to the editor published by the Las Cruces Bulletin on January 29.

Costello expressed concerns about potential setbacks in climate progress with the new administration. "In this winter season of diminished light, many of us are understandably feeling another type of darkness as a new administration takes over," she wrote. She highlighted New Mexico's unique position to lead on climate initiatives: "New Mexico has an unprecedented opportunity to provide bold and just leadership on climate."

As a physician, Costello emphasized the importance of environmental health for both people and the planet. "No lasting health for people or the planet will come without clean air, water, soil and intact ecosystems," she stated.

Costello urged support for several legislative measures aimed at addressing climate change in New Mexico. She mentioned the Clear Horizons Act, Community Benefits Fund, and Innovation in State Agencies Act as crucial steps toward aligning with climate goals while fostering economic transition.
