The Association of American Law Schools (AALS) hosted its annual conference titled "Courage in Action" in San Francisco, California, from January 7 to January 11, 2025. Several faculty members from the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Law participated as speakers at the event.
Professor Maryam Ahranjani contributed to the section on Balance and Well-Being in Legal Education with a work-in-progress session titled "A Dean like Me: What Diverse Faculty Expect of Diverse Deans." She co-presented this session with Penn State Law Interim Associate Dean Jill Engle.
Professor Verónica C. Gonzales participated in the Poverty Law section, which was co-sponsored by Clinical Legal Education and Pro Bono & Access to Justice sections. Her panel was titled "Critical Justice: Systemic Advocacy in Law & Society," and she was joined by Seattle University Associate Dean Steven W. Bender, University of Miami School of Law Professor Francisco Valdes, and Florida International University Professor Jennifer J. Hill.
Associate Dean John M. Kang took part in the AALS Hot Topic Program with a panel on "How Antiabortion Laws Affect Women’s Employment: An Econometrics Analysis." He co-presented with Cameron Kang, an Economics and Math student from Wellesley College.
Professor Ernesto Longa spoke in the Critical Theories section with a panel titled "Advancing Academic Excellence Through ABA Standards on Academic Freedom, Antiracism, and Diversity."
Lastly, Professor Gabriel Pacyniak presented in the Community Economic Development section, co-sponsored by the Environmental Law Section. His panel was titled "The Local Turn in Federal Climate Policy," and he co-presented with Selene Diaz, a Political Science MA candidate at the University of New Mexico.
