The upcoming session of the 57th Legislature is set to begin on January 21, 2025, and will conclude on March 22, 2025. This marks a 60-day general session where legislation can be introduced on any topic until February 20. Currently, over 165 bills have been prefiled. In the previous session of this length in 2023, a total of 1,089 bills were introduced with only about 20% being signed into law.

The Senate will see significant changes with 16 out of its 42 seats occupied by new members. Six of these newcomers have prior legislative experience. The House will also welcome new faces with a total of 15 new members once two vacancies are filled.

One vacancy exists in District 6 (Cibola and McKinley) following the passing of Democratic Representative Eliseo Alcon. The governor is considering appointing former Democratic Representative Harry Garcia but awaits legal advice regarding his residency in the district. Another vacancy in District 59 (Chaves) has been filled by Mark Murphy after Chaves County commissioners appointed him to replace Republican Representative Jared Hembree who resigned due to health concerns.

In the coming days, coverage will include an overview of key issues impacting business and the state, as well as details from the governor's state of the state message during the session convening. This will be the governor’s final 60-day session, with Democratic leadership aiming for a swift start by prioritizing public safety-oriented legislation.

A team led by Chamber President and CEO Terri Cole, Chamber Chairman Del Esparza, and Sherman McCorkle, chair of State Legislative Affairs, will cover all major developments from Santa Fe starting Monday. They plan to present their complete legislative agenda next Friday to outline their lobbying activities.
