ABQ Reads, a literacy program in Albuquerque, distributed backpacks filled with supplies to kindergarten and first-grade students at Atrisco, Bel-Air, and Whittier elementary schools in December. The initiative aims to foster reading skills by creating an engaging learning environment.
The program donated eight books per student during the fall semester, totaling 978 books distributed. Each month, around 200 children receive books to build their home libraries. In December, the students also received backpacks containing school supplies and gifts from community sponsors and donors.
The program emphasizes relationship-building between students and tutors. Tutors contributed additional small gifts like knitted caps and socks during the holiday season.
Despite a rise in tutor numbers from 125 in August to 164 in January, ABQ Reads still requires more tutors to meet demand. Currently, about 150 students receive tutoring services.
Looking ahead to spring, ABQ Reads plans to distribute two books monthly through April. They have acquired Dr. Seuss books for March's Dr. Seuss month and are seeking sponsorships for summer reading materials.
A year-end celebration will occur at each school in April to recognize student achievements. Atrisco Elementary will mark its 20th year with ABQ Reads by hosting New Mexico author Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw at their event.
"THANK YOU to ALL of our tutors, sponsors, and donors for continuing to support the rise of reading with ABQ Reads!"
