Attorney General Bondi: We will 'vigorously defend the Second Amendment against any form of government overreach'

Pam Bondi, Attorney General of the United States, announced in a memorandum to Department of Justice (DOJ) employees the formation of a new Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force. This initiative aims to strategically combine litigation and departmental policy tools to safeguard constitutional gun rights.

"The right to keep and bear arms is a cornerstone of American liberty," said Pamela Jo Bondi, U.S. Attorney General. "This Task Force sends a clear message: the Department of Justice will vigorously defend the Second Amendment against any form of government overreach or infringement."

The announcement follows President Trump's Executive Order 14206, which directs the DOJ to reassess and reverse Biden-era gun control policies. As part of implementing that executive order, Bondi issued an April 8, 2025, memorandum creating the Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force to promote stronger federal protections of gun rights.

According to the DOJ memorandum, the Task Force comprises representatives from multiple departmental offices, including the Civil Rights Division, Civil Division, Criminal Division, the Solicitor General’s office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and sections of the Associate and Deputy Attorney General’s offices. This ensures cross-divisional coordination to support litigation and policy action.

According to The Washington Post, alongside the Task Force announcement, the DOJ reversed a key Biden-era "zero-tolerance" enforcement policy applied to federally licensed gun dealers. The department also initiated reviews of additional regulations concerning stabilizing braces and dealer licensing criteria. Critics argue these measures roll back regulatory oversight; proponents see them as affirmations of Second Amendment rights.

Bondi was sworn in as U.S. Attorney General in early 2025 during President Trump's second term. She previously served as Attorney General of Florida from 2011 to 2019. Her DOJ tenure has been marked by the establishment of politically focused initiatives such as the Weaponization Working Group and the Second Amendment Task Force.
