Tri-State Generation and Transmission has announced the closure of the Escalante coal-fired power plant located in McKinley County. The company plans to shut down the facility within this year. Alongside this, Tri-State will also retire Craig Units 2 and 3 and close the Colowyo coal mine.
The company has pledged $5 million in transition funds to support the community affected by the closure of Escalante. This amount is significantly less than the $40 million allocated for communities around San Juan Generating Station under the Energy Transition Act.
Camilla Feibelman, director of Sierra Club’s Rio Grande Chapter, responded with a statement regarding these developments.
