On January 21, 2020, members of the Public Regulation Commission (PRC) listened to comments from numerous New Mexicans advocating for a complete transition from San Juan coal electricity to renewable energy sources. The hearing focused on determining which resources should replace the coal-fired electricity that PNM plans to discontinue using by 2022. This case has been separated from discussions about PNM's potential exit from the coal plant and its financing.

The call from residents across New Mexico was clear: they urged the commission to mandate a 100% renewable replacement instead of supporting PNM's proposal, which includes constructing a new gas plant.

Jessica Keetso of To Nizhoni Ani, Laurie Weahkee from Native American Voters Alliance, and Camilla Feibelman, Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter director, are among those who are spearheading efforts to advocate for renewable energy solutions in place of coal.
