The Rio Grande Foundation, known for its focus on promoting economic freedom in New Mexico, has responded to the latest findings of the Economic Freedom of North America 2024 index. The report, published by the Fraser Institute and Bridwell Center at Southern Methodist University, shows a decline in New Mexico's ranking from 45th to 47th.
The index evaluates states based on taxation, government spending, and regulation. Under Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the state's current legislative direction, New Mexico's performance has deteriorated compared to other states. The state now ranks above only California, New York, and Hawaii. Meanwhile, New Hampshire, Idaho, and Oklahoma are identified as the top performers.
Economic freedom is often linked with positive economic outcomes such as reduced poverty and inequality.
