Mayor Eric Enriquez, City of Las Cruces | City of Las Cruces
The sixth annual Las Cruces Space Festival will take place from September 6-14, 2024. The festival celebrates space-related activities and history in the region. Established in 2018, it aims to make space accessible to everyone with free activities funded by sponsors.
This year's festival features former NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, collaborating with the Space for Art Foundation. Stott will participate in events during the first weekend, engaging with the community's youth through space art. On Saturday, September 7, she will speak publicly and present a documentary at City Council Chambers. Christina Korp, known as the "Astronaut Wrangler," will join her to discuss her extensive experience in the space industry.
The festival begins on Friday, September 6, with an opening reception and the premiere of an astrophotography exhibit at the Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science. Activities include STEM and art projects for all ages.
Saturday continues with downtown art projects, space trivia, and talks. The opening weekend concludes on Sunday, September 8, with an open house at Spaceport America. Registration is currently open for this event.
Throughout the week, there will be missions at Challenger Learning Center, moongazing sessions, astronomy talks, and activities at New Mexico State University (NMSU). The final day features Space Saturday at Downtown Plaza de Las Cruces during the Farmers and Craft Market.
A poster contest held in partnership with Las Cruces Public Schools selected two winners: Amelia Janer (8th grade) and Gemma Crunk (7th grade). Their posters were inspired by “Fashion in Space,” earning them gift bags from festival supporters.
The volunteer-led team collaborates with local schools, universities, colleges, cultural groups, and others to offer a diverse event celebrating regional space achievements. Those interested in joining or partnering can contact [email protected]
