A $6.18 million highway safety improvement project on US 54 in Otero County has been completed, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). The project covered the stretch from milepost 2 to milepost 6, just north of the Texas state line.
Work began in March 2025 and concluded last week with the installation and activation of new intersection lighting. The improvements included widening US 54 at Angelina Boulevard to add acceleration and deceleration lanes, installing lighting, and adding permanent signage and roadway striping. These changes are intended to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for drivers in the area.
Constructors, Inc., served as the contractor for this project and finished ahead of schedule.
The NMDOT expressed appreciation for public cooperation during construction. "The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) remains committed to the safety of the traveling public and thanks you for your cooperation during this work," stated NMDOT.
