In collaboration with Rainbow Ryders Hot Air Balloon Ride Company, the New Mexico Tourism Department is launching a new hot air balloon at the 2025 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. This initiative aims to commemorate the upcoming centennial of Route 66 in 2026. The balloon's first flight is scheduled for October 4, 2025, during the event's initial Mass Ascension.
To mark both the centennial and the balloon's debut, limited-edition collectible pins will be available at Balloon Fiesta Park starting on October 4. Visitors can obtain a pin by completing a short survey at the New Mexico True booth on Main Street.
Acting Secretary Lancing Adams expressed enthusiasm about the event: "As home to both the world’s largest hot air balloon rally and one of the country’s richest histories of Route 66, Albuquerque is the ideal location to celebrate and amplify our profile as a premier region for the Route 66 experience." He added that this event showcases New Mexico's readiness to welcome visitors along its stretch of Route 66 in 2026 and beyond.
Heather Appelman, President of Rainbow Ryders, also shared her excitement: "We’re so excited to team up with the New Mexico Tourism Department to help bring the Route 66 Centennial celebration to life in the skies." She emphasized that launching this balloon at such a significant event honors Route 66's history and encourages exploration.
The New Mexico Tourism Department will license the state's official Route 66 Centennial logo, while Rainbow Ryders will operate the balloon. The company has committed to flying it at least nine times across various rallies and festivals, including both the 2025 and 2026 Balloon Fiestas. The balloon was manufactured by Lindstrand Balloons USA.
