An alert and thoughtful USPS employee is being credited for helping an Arizona man return home unharmed.

USPS employee Mary McCarty saw Glenn French, 68, wandering and disoriented in the Post Office parking lot in Animas when she arrived for work on Sept. 3. McCarty, a sales and service associate, is EMT trained, according to KOAT. She brought French inside and took his vital signs to make sure he wasn’t in distress.

After a pleasant conversation and hearing his story, McCarty contacted local authorities. French was eventually picked up by family members who took him back home to Sierra Vista, Arizona, nearly 160 miles away.

The Animas Postal Service and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office are crediting McCarty for her efforts. "McCarty’s concern and swift action make her a hero in the eyes of the Postal Service and to the community,” said Animas Postmaster Jose Enriquez.

According to KOAT, French suffered traumatic head injuries in a motorcycle accident years ago and recently moved from New York to Arizona with his wife Robin. A disoriented French told McCarty he had driven from New York with his dog Maggie and had run out of gas when in reality he was in Arizona when decided to go for a drive with the dog.

The vehicle was located at an abandoned gas station the next day near when he was found.
