Doug Wiggins understands the hardships that can come from growing up in Albuquerque. That’s why he is trying to help others facing those same hardships by hosting canned food drives.

Wiggins is the owner of “Done By Doug,” an Albuquerque design company. He held two canned food drives earlier this month to not only promote his business but help others.

“This is the second one this year and it’s an easy way to give back to the community that has supported me,” Wiggins told the Albuquerque Journal. “With my fashion design label, I have a platform to make a difference.”

Wiggins held his most recent canned food drive at Power Plant at 3719 Fourth NW. A raffle was also held for those who donated at least five items. The prize is a custom piece created by Wiggins.

“This is my way of thanking those that donate,” Wiggins said.

Wiggins created “Done by Doug” in 2019 and promotes his designs on social media. “I had a friend tell me that I should be doing this,” he said. “It’s really expanded the reach of what I do. Expressing yourself through fashion is one of the most powerful things.”

He added, “My work often lives in the area of speaking out against acts of violence or the social injustices in our society. It’s important to make a social commentary on that and get people talking, regardless if they like my work or not. It’s meant to be a conduit.”

He’ll continue to hold canned food drives throughout the year. “This is the avenue I’ve chosen,” he said. “It takes time to make change. Make all of the steps count.”
