Security is advancing to a new level with the introduction of robotic land rovers.

The rovers have infrared cameras that can capture a person's face at 200 meters and a vehicle at 800 meters, according to a KOB report. They also can maneuver over all types of terrain.

“These are our autonomous security officers,” Andy Sanchez, the director of sales for Team 1st Technologies told KOB. Team 1st Technologies was founded in 2007 to find technologies, vet them and make sure they can be an asset. Originally designed by SMP Robotics, the 350-pound rovers were first used for mining minerals on the moon. They can cover a wide area of various terrains and automatically return their charging base.

“We need plenty of security guards these days,” David Dworsky, the president of Team 1st Technologies told KOB. He estimated that 450,000 of the rovers are needed for security to cover North America alone.

He also said the rovers can save lives. “We want to put robots out there to first find the danger areas, and if someone gets killed, let’s kill a robot. Let’s not kill a person,” he said.

According to KOB, the service is available through a monthly subscription that costs about $10,000 which breaks down to about $15 an hour for 24-hour security coverage. Dworsky said his initial customers have come from the oil and gas industries.
