Groundbreaking ceremonies were recently held in Santa Fe to celebrate the construction of the Airport Terminal and Parking Lot Expansion project.

“This project has been on the runway and now, it's taking off,” Mayor Alan Webber said in a press release from the city. “The airport is a significant part of Santa Fe’s future. It represents economic opportunity and support for tourism. This $21.5-million investment will improve the customer experience – and it’s only the first phase. After this, we’ll go for another $20-million investment.”

The new parking lot expansion will feature 700-plus spaces designed for short- and long-term parking; staff parking; solar power coordination; updated landscaping, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities; curbside public and commercial circulation; and a cellphone waiting area.

The terminal expansion will feature additional departure and arrival gates, enlarged secure areas, additional restrooms, administration facilities, baggage claim renovation, and the inclusion of public art.

The existing terminal is targeted for a facelift. Counters will be replaced, airline offices will be remodeled, the concessions facility will be replaced, and a baggage conveyor will be added, according to the press release. A new sprinkler system will also be added.

“The changes we’re making to the parking lots and roads will improve the flow of traffic,” Councilor Chris Rivera, chairman of the Airport Advisory Board, said. “We’ll retain the quaintness of the terminal while adding seating capacity. Adding a gate creates the potential for airlines to add routes. The more visitors that we can accommodate, the better for tax receipts and the city budget.”

Phase one of the project is scheduled for completion in January 2023, according to the press release. Funding continues to be sought for the design of phase two.
