A woman has been arrested for suspicion of arson after a fire nearly wiped out a neighborhood in Socorro, New Mexico, according to KRQE.
The Socorro Police Department said they won't confirm any information about the suspect. However, county jail records show that Erica Wiesen was arrested for arson and domestic violence. Her address matches the street where the massive fire occurred.
Neighbors are grateful no one was killed. “There’s a lot of elderly, there’s a lot of sick people, and you’re wondering if they got out. We started calling to find out how the neighbors were,” Valentine Anaya said to KRQE.
The fire along Ivy Street caused panic among residents as 40 mile-per-hour winds fueled the flames. Two mobile homes were a total loss, according to the Socorro Fire Department chief, and another house was severely damaged. Several cars and trucks also endured severe damage from the fire.
Neighbors speculated that suspect Wiesen may have been dealing with “emotional and domestic issues,” KRQE reported.
“You feel bad; you never know what’s on people’s minds and what they will do,” Anaya said. “I guess we found out a little bit about when people get desperate, they do desperate things, and unfortunately other families had to pay for it.”
The fire department has yet to determine how the blaze started.
