Christian Slough joins NM EDD's office after diverse experience

Christian Slough joined UNM Rainforest Innovations (UNMRI) as an Innovation Intern during his last semester at The University of New Mexico, where he was completing his Master of Business Administration. As an Innovation Intern, he conducted in-depth prior art searches and market analyses and identified potential commercial partners for local technology startups. Additionally, he drafted non-confidential summaries to position university technologies for external licensing and partnerships.


APD arrests suspect during Downtown operation targeting underage drinking and firearms

ALBUQUERQUE – APD detectives and officers arrested a 19-year-old during an overnight operation in Downtown that targeted underage individuals with firearms in parking garages. The arrest occurred one week after a 17-year-old was murdered in another Downtown parking garage.


APD arrests suspect linked to multiple violent burglaries

ALBUQUERQUE – APD burglary detectives have arrested a suspect in multiple home burglaries. In one case, he forced entry into a Northeast Heights home and used violence against elderly residents before stealing money from them.


Pediatrician presents findings on fentanyl exposure among infants

"Why and how does a baby get fentanyl?" This question was on the mind of Keisuke “KK” Abe, MD, MPH, during his second day of practice in the pediatric emergency department at The University of New Mexico Hospital in 2021. He encountered young children being rushed in for treatment from the life-threatening drug. Motivated to address this issue, Abe enrolled in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program with a concentration in Epidemiology at the College of Population Health (COPH) during his Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship.


Mayor Keller appoints Jodie Esquibel as Director of Albuquerque Community Safety

Graduate student Josef Sorenson receives DOE's SCGSR award

University of New Mexico Department of Physics and Astronomy graduate student Josef Sorenson has been selected to receive the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) award. This recognition will allow him to pursue his Ph.D. next year at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) with his proposal, “Co-design of sensors and electronics for 4D trackers.” The project involves experiments with readout electronics on sensors for the ATLAS experiment, which measures high-energy proton collisions.

Field day in Corona to highlight student livestock technology

Taylor Andrews counts herself among the fortunate individuals who get to conduct unique research at New Mexico State University’s Corona Range and Livestock Research Center. Andrews, a doctoral student majoring in animal science at NMSU, has worked as a graduate assistant in Corona for three years. She has completed three dissertation projects at the center, located eight miles east of Corona, where she has found a second home.

UNM Hospital introduces new treatment for sleep apnea

The University of New Mexico Hospital has introduced a new treatment for sleep apnea, available as of this summer. Sleep apnea is a common condition where an individual's breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The hospital now offers the Inspire device, an implantable system designed to alleviate symptoms associated with the disorder.

The Tribal Notification and Engagement Consultation amendment to the City's Integrated Development Ordinance (IDO) was unanimously passed by the City Council in June 2024. The updated ordinance was sponsored by Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn.

The Albuquerque City Council has passed Council Bill No. O-24-12, now enacted as Ordinance No. O-2024-019, which introduces a small area text amendment to the Integrated Development Ordinance for the Northwest Mesa Escarpment View Protection Overlay Zone (VPO-2). The bill was sponsored by Tammy Fiebelkorn.


Mayor Keller vetoes measure lowering election thresholds

This week, Mayor Tim Keller vetoed City Council resolution R-24-47, a proposed City Charter Amendment ballot question that, if passed, would lower the threshold for electing the Mayor and City Council from the current mandatory majority system—50% plus 1—to a plurality. This change would mean that only one election would be held where the candidate with the most votes wins.


Albuquerque celebrates significant expansion at Netflix's Mesa Del Sol campus

ALBUQUERQUE – Today, the City of Albuquerque celebrated the expansion of Netflix’s Mesa Del Sol campus, which has grown from its initial 28 acres to 108 acres. The project included the development of four purpose-built soundstages, three mills, one production office, and two stage support buildings. Netflix came to Albuquerque in 2018 and has been awarded a total of $5.5 million in Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funding, $6 million in in-kind infrastructure from the City of Albuquerque, and $27 million in State LEDA funding.
