APD arrests suspect linked to multiple violent burglaries

ALBUQUERQUE – APD burglary detectives have arrested a suspect in multiple home burglaries. In one case, he forced entry into a Northeast Heights home and used violence against elderly residents before stealing money from them.

Detectives identified Dorsett Matthews, 42, as the suspect in at least two home robberies and obtained an arrest warrant on Wednesday. Anyone else who may be a victim of similar home burglaries is encouraged to call APD at 505-242-COPS.

Detectives with the Auto Theft, Burglary, Robbery, and Intel units were working an operation in the Southeast Area Command when they located the suspect vehicle. Detectives followed the vehicle covertly and coordinated with Southeast Proactive Response Team officers to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. They identified the suspect as Dorsett Matthews.

Matthews is accused of forcing his way into a home in the 3800 block of Hacienda Dr., N.E. on June 18, 2024, and demanding money as he searched different rooms. He forcefully shoved the elderly homeowner to the ground before taking $150 in cash and leaving the home.

As they investigated the burglary, detectives learned about a similar burglary that took place on June 15 in the 400 block of Sierra Dr., S.E.

Matthews was on probation for a previous burglary incident. His probation was revoked and he was booked. Detectives are continuing their investigation and additional charges are pending.

APD Robbery detectives charged Dorsett Matthews, 42, with a robbery in the University Area Command.

Matthews was already in jail after being arrested on July 5 for home burglaries and using violence against elderly residents at one home.

Detectives obtained a new arrest warrant today that charges Matthews for a robbery on June 29. He approached an elderly male victim who was working underneath his truck in the street and sprayed him with OC spray. Matthews demanded the victim’s wallet and battered him before forcefully stealing it from his back pocket.
