Los Alamos National Laboratory, on September 11, 2023, announced a groundbreaking achievement in the field of machine learning. Their team has successfully developed an algorithm capable of processing data larger than a computer's memory. This algorithm, which sets a new world record for processing massive data sets, was put to the test on Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Summit supercomputer.


NMSU:  2023 Scale Up NM Pitch Competition for tech startups based in New Mexico

New Mexico State University (NMSU) has recently announced the upcoming 2023 Scale Up NM Pitch Competition for technology startups based in New Mexico. The event, hosted by the Scale Up NM program, is scheduled to take place on October 26, 2023, at Electric Playhouse in Albuquerque. Aspiring entrepreneurs with innovative ideas have until September 25 to submit their applications for a chance to participate in the competition.


UNM: Collaborative MOU Between NRAO, AUI, and UNM for Future U.S. Radio Astronomy Initiatives

The University of New Mexico (UNM) has recently announced a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) in order to explore potential partnerships for future radio astronomy initiatives in the United States. This partnership aims to focus on the development of the next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA).


NM Department of Health: Winners of the New Mexico Grown Program released

The winners of the New Mexico Grown Program have been announced by the New Mexico Department of Health. The Golden Chile Awards, presented by the New Mexico Grown Coalition, recognize and honor initiatives that promote good nutrition and contribute to the state's agricultural economy. In a press release, it was revealed that this year's winners include 10 senior centers, 17 school districts, and 18 preschools, as well as 21 food producers supplying fresh produce, products, and meat to these institutions.


DOE EM: Initial shipment of uranium oxide from Portsmouth arrives at disposal site

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) recently announced that a shipment of 120 depleted uranium oxide (DUOx) storage cylinders has arrived at a disposal site in West Texas. This shipment originated from EM's Portsmouth Site in Ohio, marking the first shipment from this location.


NMSU offers new computer engineering degree program

New Mexico State University unveiled a newly introduced Bachelor of Science degree program in computer engineering on Sept. 11, offered through a collaboration between the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering and the Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences, according to a press release.

Albuquerque introduced Luis Fitch's art exhibition "Nortesur" on Sept. 11, which is set to debut at the South Broadway Cultural Center on Sept. 14, accompanied by a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition showcases Fitch's artistic journey, starting from his upbringing along the Tijuana-San Diego border to his current status as a globally recognized Mexican artist living in the U.S., according to a press release.

New Mexico Republicans file lawsuit to challenge Grisham’s gun ban

New Mexico House and Senate Republicans announced on Sept. 9 that they will file a federal lawsuit to challenge the temporary gun ban enacted by New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The ban on carrying guns in public was put forth following the shooting death of an 11-year-old on Sept. 6.


Republican State Rep: ‘I am calling on counsel to begin the impeachment process against Gov. Grisham’

New Mexico Republican Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block called for the impeachment of New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham over the governor’s controversial temporary ban on firearms in the Albuquerque area. Lord said specifically that the governor’s public health declaration goes against New Mexicans' Second Amendment rights.


Bernalillo County sheriff: ‘The temporary ban challenges the foundations of our constitution’

Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen, among other prominent figures, has come out to say that he will not enforce New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s ban on firearms. The gun ban was set to be in place for 30 days and cover Albuquerque and surrounding areas, Allen’s jurisdiction.

Los Alamos National Laboratory: Emergency Management division initiates forest thinning operations within Rendija Canyon

Los Alamos National Laboratory's Emergency Management division has recently begun a forest thinning project in Rendija Canyon. The initiative aims to protect the community from severe wildfires and improve the overall health of the forest. Known as the Rendija Canyon Wildland Fire Fuels Reduction and Defensible Space Project, it will establish a fuel break covering 135 acres next to Rendija Canyon Road.


HSD: A 23 percent rise in financial aid for economically disadvantaged families in New Mexico

The New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) recently announced a positive development for economically disadvantaged families in the state. Over 9,000 low-income residents have received a 23 percent increase in financial aid through family cash assistance programs. This adjustment is the first increase in cash assistance for New Mexicans since 2011.
