Lockheed Martin successfully tests extended-range guided rocket system

Lockheed Martin announced a successful flight test of its Extended-Range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (ER GMLRS) at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The test involved launching the Alternative Warhead (AW) variant of the rocket from a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), validating the system’s range, accuracy, and lethality.

According to Lockheed Martin, this achievement moves the AW variant closer to operational use by both the U.S. Army and international partners. The ER GMLRS can reach 150 kilometers, which is more than double the range of the standard GMLRS at 70 kilometers. Despite this increased range, Lockheed Martin states that “precision and reliability remain at the level users expect from the original system.”

The company also highlights that the extended reach allows for engagement of high-value, time-sensitive targets over a broader area. This capability supports missions such as counter air defense suppression and enables effective targeting across both point and area objectives.

Dave Griser, vice president of Lockheed Martin Precision Fires Rockets, commented on the demonstration: “ER GMLRS delivers the extended range our partners need, on a platform they already trust. This successful demonstration of our Alternative Warhead variant confirms ER GMLRS can reliably deliver precision effects against both point and area targets at double the range.”

Lockheed Martin notes that ER GMLRS remains compatible with existing HIMARS and M270A2 launchers. This compatibility provides new capabilities without requiring additional launch platforms or changes to current unit structures.

Looking ahead, further testing will involve soldiers demonstrating ER GMLRS AW capabilities in early 2026. The company anticipates rising demand for these systems in Europe and the Indo-Pacific regions due to their longer reach and ability to support multinational security networks.

Lockheed Martin describes itself as a global defense technology firm focused on innovation and delivering technologies for all-domain mission solutions.
