Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her sorrow and shock following a mass shooting in Las Cruces on Friday night. The incident at Young Park resulted in three fatalities and at least 15 injuries. Gov. Lujan Grisham extended her condolences to the victims, their families, and the Las Cruces community.
She stated, "I am heartbroken and horrified by the mass shooting Friday night at Young Park in Las Cruces. Three people are dead and at least 15 others were wounded in this senseless act of violence." The governor emphasized the impact of such violence on communities, noting its lasting effects.
In response to the tragedy, Gov. Lujan Grisham is deploying state resources to assist local law enforcement with their investigation. She urged anyone with information or visual evidence related to the incident to contact the Las Cruces Police Department.
Highlighting a concerning trend, she pointed out that violent crime in Las Cruces has risen by 46 percent compared to last year. "This is not merely a statistic; these are our neighbors, our children, our future," she remarked.
Gov. Lujan Grisham criticized the New Mexico Legislature for failing to address critical issues like juvenile crime and assault weapon bans during their session. She called for public demand for legislative action: "The public should demand that the New Mexico Legislature—and all public officials in our state—acknowledge New Mexico’s crime crisis."
She anticipates a special legislative session focused on public safety concerns and remains committed to collaborative efforts across government levels and community partnerships to tackle gun violence comprehensively.
