The New Mexico Senate passed a bill aimed at equipping state agencies with the necessary tools to address climate change. Senate Bill 83, known as the Innovation in State Government Fund, is designed to provide resources for reducing pollution and protecting New Mexico's environment. The bill was sponsored by Senate Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart and Senator Heather Berghmans, both representing Albuquerque.

Mimi Stewart emphasized the importance of proactive measures: "We can either give our state the tools to tackle climate challenges head-on, or we can keep playing catch-up while New Mexicans pay the price in droughts, floods, fires, and rising costs." The bill aims to ensure that state agencies have the capacity to take action on various environmental issues.

The fund allocates $10 million to enhance agency capabilities in addressing climate challenges. It focuses on expanding agency capacity by providing departments like the Environment Department with necessary workforce and technology. Additionally, it promotes economic resilience by supporting industries that offer good-paying jobs and reduce reliance on extractive industries.

Senator Heather Berghmans said, "This is about ensuring New Mexico stays on track to meet our climate goals while equipping our communities for the challenges ahead." The bill also emphasizes strengthening pollution monitoring and ensuring accountability through progress reports from agencies.

Senator Harold Pope Jr. highlighted concerns about future generations: "Our young people are constantly asking us ‘what are we doing?’ We should try to leave this world a better place for them."

With a Senate vote of 26-14, SB 83 will now proceed to the House for further consideration. Its funding is already included in House Bill 2, which is part of the state budget.
