The Chamber has released the first edition of the 2025 Legislative RoundUp on January 20. The following day, the 57th Legislature began its first session, marking the start of a 60-day general session that will conclude on March 22, 2025.
Throughout this period, the Chamber aims to provide comprehensive coverage of legislative measures affecting New Mexico's economic competitiveness. Emphasizing collaboration among decision-makers, the Chamber highlights several areas requiring attention.
"Make New Mexico a Safer Place," addresses drug addiction and behavioral health disorders as significant contributors to crime. The Chamber advocates for increased investment in addiction services and treatment alongside stronger laws to combat crime effectively. Proposed measures include stiffer penalties for serious crimes, ending repeat offenses, boosting law enforcement numbers, and equipping them with advanced technology.
The need to "Reduce the Tax Burden" on businesses and families is another focus. Despite substantial new funding, current budgets lack tax relief or reform. The high gross-receipts tax and tax "pyramiding" are identified as burdensome for small businesses in New Mexico, where most have fewer than 20 employees.
To "Ensure High-Performing Schools Are Run by Great Leaders," the Chamber emphasizes leadership development and expansion of quality charter schools. Improving early literacy is seen as crucial for creating a skilled workforce necessary for attracting business investments.
Efforts to "Make New Mexico an Attractive Place to Practice Medicine" include proposals to remove GRT taxes on medical providers and patients, increase Medicaid reimbursement rates, and reform the medical malpractice system.
On Friday, the Chamber plans to unveil its legislative agenda developed with input from public and private sector partners and approved by its Board of Directors. This agenda will detail actions deemed essential for advancing these goals.
