Albuquerque Reads, a literacy program, was recently highlighted in the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board's newsletter, ERB Connect. This feature marked the end of 2024 on a positive note for the program.
The initiative involves Albuquerque Public Schools site coordinators who work to create engaging lessons and foster a supportive community environment for students and tutors. The aim is to help kindergarten and first-grade students improve their reading skills through personalized tutoring sessions.
ABQ Reads operates as a classroom-based tutoring program across three elementary schools: Whittier, Atrisco, and Bel-Air. It offers each participating student 90 minutes of one-on-one literacy tutoring weekly from September to May. Additionally, the program provides up to 20 books per student for their personal at-home library and grants access to online reading resources.
The organization continues to seek more tutors in order to expand its reach and support more students in developing essential literacy skills. Those interested in volunteering can visit ABQReads.com or contact them via email at [email protected].
