NM Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham | governor.state.nm.us
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has accepted the resignations of the remaining members of the Western New Mexico University (WNMU) Board of Regents. In her statement, she emphasized appointing new leaders committed to public trust. She expressed gratitude towards members of the New Mexico Legislature who shared concerns over recent developments.
The governor criticized the WNMU Board's decision to approve a $1.9 million severance package for Dr. Shepard, calling it a significant disconnect from state needs, especially considering New Mexico's median family income of $61,000. According to Gov. Lujan Grisham, "The amount of money contained in Dr. Shepard’s separation agreement could have addressed food insecurity across the entire WNMU student body for a full year."
She is currently reviewing candidates to replace the former board members and aims to bring accountability to WNMU. The governor stressed that all public universities must uphold fiscal responsibility to both students and taxpayers.
Gov. Lujan Grisham challenged the board's claim that they operate independently from her office and the Department of Higher Education, noting this reflects broader accountability issues. She acknowledged challenges in recruiting top talent but insisted on balancing this with obligations to taxpayers and students.
She also welcomed an investigation by the Attorney General into these contracts and expressed interest in collaborating with lawmakers on reforming severance package structures at public institutions: "We must ensure that generous payouts no longer reward poor performance while maintaining our ability to attract qualified leaders."
In closing, Gov. Lujan Grisham underscored a focus on responsible resource management and student success: "Our focus must remain on responsible stewardship of public resources and the success of our students."
Notably, terms for Regent Mary Hotvedt and Student Regent Trent Jones expired at year's end, with no intention from the governor for reappointment. Successors will assume roles post-Senate confirmation.
Resigning regents Mary Haviland, Dan Lopez, and Dalva Moellenberg will have their successors appointed by Gov. Lujan Grisham immediately upon appointment without waiting for Senate confirmation due to filling vacancies.
