The Native American Rights Fund (NARF), a national, Native-led legal defense fund, has highlighted several achievements in 2024. NARF has been advocating for justice for Tribal Nations and Native American people for over five decades. Despite ongoing challenges, the organization takes this moment to reflect on its successes and the crucial role of donations and support from NARF supporters.
One notable success was the support provided to Native voters during the U.S. Election Day. "Thank you to the 170 volunteers who served as NARF poll monitors this year," stated NARF. Their presence across six states helped address issues that might have restricted Native voting rights. The organization also expressed gratitude to every Native voter who used their hotline for assistance and to supporters who promoted it on social media.
In April 2024, an unprecedented number of elected Tribal leaders participated in the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. This gathering underscored significant progress toward Indigenous self-determination and global diplomacy.
In North Dakota, efforts led by Native voters, along with the Spirit Lake Tribe and Turtle Mountain Chippewa, resulted in holding the state accountable for fair representation. After legal action, a court-mandated fair voting map allowed communities to elect representatives in the state legislature.
The establishment of the new NARF Tribal Water Institute marked another achievement in 2024. The institute offers legal support and resources aimed at ensuring Tribal Nations have sustainable water resources. Currently, twelve Tribal water settlements are awaiting Congressional approval, highlighting the urgency of this initiative.
NARF expressed appreciation for continued support: "Thank you for supporting the Native American Rights Fund, and please keep sharing NARF clients’ stories on social media." Looking ahead, they anticipate further accomplishments in 2025.
