Leadership Albuquerque participants recently engaged in an immersive Economic Development Day, gaining insights into the economic landscape of New Mexico. The event included visits to key locations such as Wagner Equipment Co. and Netflix Studios.
David Campbell, chair of Leadership Albuquerque and executive director of the Lobo Development Corporation, emphasized the significance of a growing economy, stating that it leads to "rising wages, more home-building and home-buying, a broader tax base, more available jobs, and an increased capacity of government to address persistent social challenges."
Campbell outlined the state's economic challenges: New Mexico's poverty rate stands at 18%, one of the highest in the nation. Additionally, its median household income ranks among the lowest five states. From 2010 to 2020, New Mexico's population grew by only 58,000 residents — a growth rate of 2.8%. In contrast, neighboring states experienced significantly higher growth rates during this period.
Participants also explored Central New Mexico Community College's role in workforce development. Tracy Hartzler, CNM president, discussed strategies for building an agile workforce in New Mexico.
The session included an examination of the state’s tax code structure led by Leadership Albuquerque Director Scott Darnell. Participants engaged in designing an ideal tax code for New Mexico.
Addressing healthcare professional shortages was another focus area. Fred Nathan from Think New Mexico presented on potential solutions for this critical issue.
Dale Dekker provided insights into both challenges and opportunities within New Mexico's economy. At Wagner Equipment Co., company President Braden Wagner shared how the business has expanded over time.
The day concluded with a visit to Mesa del Sol and Netflix Studios where participants observed studio operations and learned about future expansion plans.
