New Mexico remains second largest oil-producing state in US

As of 2024, the United States maintains its position as the largest crude oil producer globally, a status it has held since 2018. However, within the country, oil production varies significantly by state due to differing levels of available crude oil reserves.

According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Texas continues to lead as the top oil-producing state. In 2023, Texas produced 2.01 billion barrels annually, accounting for 42.61% of U.S. production. By August 2024, Texas's monthly output was reported at 180.36 million barrels.

New Mexico holds the second position in oil production among U.S. states. In 2023, New Mexico's total annual production reached 665.55 million barrels, representing 14.1% of national output. For August 2024 alone, New Mexico produced 64.85 million barrels.

North Dakota ranks third with an annual production of 431.72 million barrels in 2023 and a share of 9.14% in U.S. production. Its output for August 2024 was recorded at 36.24 million barrels.

Following North Dakota is Colorado with an annual production of 166.79 million barrels in 2023 and a share of 3.53%. Colorado's monthly output for August 2024 stood at 14.09 million barrels.

Oklahoma comes next with an annual production of 156.78 million barrels in 2023 and a share of U.S production at 3.32%. For August 2024, Oklahoma produced approximately 11.92 million barrels.

Alaska rounds out the top six with an annual production figure of about 155.47 million barrels in 2023 and a contribution of roughly 3.29% to U.S production totals, producing around12 .28 million barrels in August that year.

The EIA highlights these figures as indicative of varying levels across different states' petroleum industries.
