State officials and local organizations are preparing to respond to former President Donald Trump's proposed immigration policies. Trump plans to declare a national emergency to use military resources for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
On November 22, several immigration advocacy groups, including Somos Un Pueblo Unido, El Centro de Igualidad y Derecho, The Santa Fe Dreamers Project, The Semilla Project, and the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, held a press conference at the State Capitol in New Mexico. They were joined by New Mexico Speaker of the House Javier Martinez to discuss their efforts and concerns regarding potential impacts on immigrants under a second Trump presidency.
Javier Martinez stated, “I am blessed to sit in the Speaker’s chair, and it’s not lost on me that that comes with a great deal of responsibility. That’s why I will continue to fight alongside all of you to support New Mexico’s working families, and that includes our immigrant families.”
The advocacy groups emphasized their commitment to supporting both documented and undocumented immigrants in light of these developments.
